Burger Bar Baptisms - burger 101 at Cafe 1001

Cafe 1001 is a venue that is open for breakfast at 6am, lunch, dinner and everything in-between: free wifi/internet, DJs, chill out room, bands, etc. (Incidentally, it's not located at number 1001, just in case you were heading there.)

Messieurs Basu and Rowe were hanging out with my good self in said venue as we were playing there later. We got given tokens for up to six items of food/drink, which presented me with an opportunity I couldn't turn down despite having already eaten a hearty dinner (a 'leon rogan josh' with brown rice if you must know). A double dinner is only acceptable if there is a special purpose for it... although, 'double lunching' is another matter entirely.

Cafe 1001 has an outdoor burger bar, which generates quite a lot of heat. So despite the chilly weather it was warm enough for Mr Rowe to sit out with only a t-shirt and his Swiss cardigan (very thin cotton). On offer was a beef burger, a marinated chicken burger, a 'mixed grill' and a few other items not worth mentioning. (A cheese-heavy 'veggie grill' - why bother? Too much cheese...)

The burgers all come with 'chunky chips', which are basically large quarter sections of potato cooked on the grill and slightly charred, which weren't bad at all - no grease, no fat, no salt or hidden rubbish. The beef burgers were 'meaty', which means they were good. They were served in a floured white bap - got to love those baps, they melt in the mouth. Toppings included sliced cucumber, sliced tomatoes, gherkins/pickles, lettuce, sliced red onion, marinated roasted red bell peppers, mayo and ketchup. You can also have cheese on the burger (I did), plus bacon if you're a filth-bag, or just in the mood for it.

I used the last option on our token to get a slice of Cheesecake and a cup of Earl Grey in the indoor cafe... it was a full-fat baked effort and tasted better than it looks in the photo - a Cheesecake superstar in the making if you will. Now, that's just given me an idea for a new TV show...
